Session: LAND USE/COVER CHANGE ANALYSIS AND APPLICATIONS

The North American Land Change Monitoring System (NALCMS) is a trilateral effort between Canada, the United States, and Mexico, coordinated by the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC). It is produced by the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS), the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Insituto Nacional de Estadstica y Geografa, INEGI), the National Commission for the Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity (Comisi Nacional para el Conocimiento y Uso de la Biodiversidad ,CONABIO), and the National Forestry Commission (Comisi Nacional Forestal, CONAFOR). The general objective of NALCMS is to devise, through collective effort, a harmonized 30-meter land cover monitoring approach designed to ensure high accuracy and consistency in monitoring land cover change for North America. In order to generate a seamless and consistent land cover map of North America, Landsat based national land cover and land cover change maps were generated by each country and later combined to create seamless continental level land cover products. This presentation provides an overview of country-specific image classification processes to produce the 2015 land cover and the 2010-2015 land cover change product, describes the continental map production process, and provides results for the North American continent. All NALCMS products can be obtained at: http://www.cec.org/nalcms.
